Wa-rousoku - Japanese traditional candles

Japanese traditional candle, wa-rousoku has a long history and it is said that candle has arrived to Japan when Buddhism was introduced to Japan in the middle of 6th century. The Japanese traditional candle has been used at palaces, temples and Buddhist altars, then the consumption of candles has increased in Edo Era (1603-1867), but candles were still valuable and expensive for common people. In Meiji Era (1867-1912) many paraffin-made (chemical material) Western candles were introduced (imported) to Japan then the demand of wa-rousoku has decreased because wa-rousoku is hand made candle, the producing takes a lot of time and they cannot be made mass-produces at a time. But today wa-rousoku is watched with keen interest also in overseas because the candle is made of vegetable materials.

Japanese traditional candle is made of vegetable material, for example haze (Japan wax, Lacquer Tree, Japanese varnish Tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum or Rhus verniciflua), beeswax and the core is made of washi (Japanese traditional handmade paper), silk floss and igusa (soft rush, Juncus effusus var. decipens).

The candle of our shop is made in Niigata city (Niigata Prefecture), where is situated on the coast of the Sea of Japan. There is so severe cold winter on the coast of the Sea of Japan of Honshu Island, in the northern part of Honshu Island and Hokkaido and they are short of flowers for the Buddhist altars. Then flower drawing candle have been invented and used instead of fresh flowers at Buddhist altars. Wa-rousoku is so suitable for also gold-leafed Buddhist altars because it does not emit smokes a lot and the candlelight can bear stronger winds. The hand-drawing four seasons flower candles make your room brightly and beautifully. Nowadays they are used also western-styled rooms as an interior design product. Besides the iron candleholder is made in Sanjo city and Tsubame city where is located next to Niigata city and famous for casting, cutlery- and metalworking industries.
