| Suruga Take Sensuji Zaiku - Suruga Bamboo Ware |
|
 |
|

Suruga Take Sensuji Zaiku (Suruga Bamboo Ware) was born in the beginning of the Edo era (1603-1867), when the first shogun of Edo era, Ieyasu Tokugawa returned from Edo castle to Sunpu castle.
He liked falconry (takagari) and craftsmen made for example food boxes and hawk cages for him.
Gokaido (The Five roads) were constructed at the same time and for example insect cage (Japanese people have kept different kinds of crickets and enjoyed their singing in autumn from the ancient times.) and candy box became famous souvenirs for tourists, because Shizuoka (called Sumpu before Meiji era) is located in the middle of the most important road, Tokaido (From Tokyo to Kyoto, nowadays railroad, motorway and bullet train follow almost the same route).
The feudal lord in Okazaki who had a skill of bamboo work, taught these skills to Inobei Shimizu, then he brought up his successors in the middle of the 19th century.
From the Meiji era (1867-1912) Suruga Take Sensuji Zaiku were exported to abroad and showed at the Expo in Wien 1873 (Japan joined for the first time).
Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trades and Industries issued Law concerning the Promotion of the Traditional Craft Industries in 1974, to protect, promote and support these traditional handicrafts, because the most of Japanese traditional crafts are made in small studios, ateliers or firms.
There are more than 1,000 different traditional crafts in Japan and only 210 (as of 03.09.2007) traditional crafts are recognized because of the regulations of the law.
But many of traditional crafts are supported by prefecture or and municipality separately.
Then The Association of Japanese Master Craftsmen operates exams to oppose low demand of traditional crafts and to bring up new successors, then give a license of the Master Craftsman to the people who has passed an exam and encourages industries of traditional crafts.
The craftsmen who have work experience of traditional crafts making at least 12 years and has lived in the hometown of the traditional craft, can take this exam.
Suruga Take Sensuji Zaiku was recognized as one of traditional crafts on 15th December in 1976 by the Minister of Economy, Trades and Industries and now Master Craftsmen and other craftsmen are bringing up new craftsmen and successors, holding demonstration sales and exhibitions in various places and develop new products activity.
The name of Suruga Take Sensuji Zaiku, Suruga is old country name of Shizuoka, Take means bamboo in Japanese and Sensuji means thousand bamboo splints, because these thousand splints fit in the width (about 90cm) of the Japanese tatami-mat (made of weaved soft rush).
Bamboo is so close (common) plant and material for Japanese people from ancient times and it is believed that the scene of Taketori Monogatari (The Tales of the Bamboo Cutter), which was written in 10th century, is at the foot of Mt. Fuji, present Fuji city (about 40km east of Shizuoka city).
Bamboo ware and products are made also other places because they glow anywhere in Japan except mountains and Hokkaido, but the feature of Shizuoka's Suruga Take Sensuji Zaiku is bending and using thin bamboo splints then assembling into holes of round cane.
And bamboo grows in couple of years so it is recognized as environmentally friendly material.
Bamboo and bamboo materials as blinds, tableware are summer goods in Japan and they can be seen in tea ceremony, restaurants.
Also light-colored (not lacquered) vases are used in summer formally and dark-colored (lacquered) vases for all year round.
But light-colored vases are recommended, if it fits into your home or room better than dark color.
